The founders of Lava Mae, which launched late last week, aim to provide direct relief--and dignity--to the homeless, providing showers installed inside converted municipal buses that will travel around the city. The project, funded by the left-wing Tides Foundation, launched June 28 and features innovative plumbing and design that taps into city fire hydrants and sophisticated internal partitions to preserve users' privacy.

Trigger Warning: "Liberal" is now a bad word on the fringy fring of the Lefty Watermelon continuum.
Be it noted, Deep Green Resistance is a nut group which primarily exists to violently eradicate industrialization and agriculture from Planet Earth. But that's not why they are in hot water with the brave soulds at "Decolonizing Yoga" and Earth First. No, DGR has done something -really- bad. They have disrespected Trans People! [the horror!]
Yes friends, so shameful it is that the Deep Green Resistance has supported [gasp!] Transphobia [swoon!] that Moisturizing Beard Product Dude, Mr. Aric McBay, has been forced to leave the movement and denounce his co-authors Derrick Jensen and Lierre Keith.
"“I left the organization at the beginning of 2012 after a trans inclusive policy was cancelled by Derrick Jensen and Lierre Keith. Many good people and good activists left the organization for that reason.
I find these transphobic attitudes to be disgusting and deeply troubling, and it bothers me a lot to have any past association with people promoting transphobia.
For me, trans rights and trans inclusion are fundamental to building effective movements and to building a world worth living in. Speaking as the main author of the book that inspired the organization in the first place: they are most definitely my core values.
And transphobia–like racism and sexism and classism and homophobia–is a poison that those in power use to destroy movements and ruin lives. When faced with such poisons, who needs COINTELPRO?
Solidarity between movements is the only hope we have.”"
Yes, Beard Product Man left because his two whacky friends weren't whacky enough. Or more likely that their failure to bow to this week's Central Party Fax was going to cost him money and brownie points with the mob.
Apparently, Jensen and Keith hold the unpopular position that trans people, (or mentally ill castrations fetishists as Kathy Shaidle likes to call them) "...are some sort of Post-Modern expression of liberal individualism and that trans womyn in particular are manifestations of patriarchy in disguise."
Yes, that's right. A guy dressed up as a chick who wants to cut off his little general is socially bad. But not because he's mentally ill, not even because he's misusing medical resources to feed his mental illness, oh no. Its because he's a manifestation of the Patriarchy in disguise. A moment of hope for sanity, dashed. [sigh].

More self-driving car propaganda.
To revel in the future that the visionaries hold out, the obstacles are nearly insurmountable. In their lush vision, America's parking lots and driveways could return to nature as a relative handful of always-handy robot cars would supplant the mostly idle cars owned in the millions by Americans today. What this guy is saying is meant to be a word of caution, but really he's just saying what these technocrats actually want: humans as bulk cargo in an automated transport system, not as free individuals going where they want, when they want.
In practice, though, all cars would likely have to be driverless—or at least capable of taking control away from a driver in heavy traffic situations—for any cars to be driverless. Otherwise, effectively one jerk in a '74 Buick would own the only right of way.
Doing so, though, would require not only expensive onboard systems in every car but wireless networking that would likely raise privacy and personal autonomy fears far more alarming to many Americans than whether NSA computers are scanning their mostly boring emails and text messages. Imagine a National Rifle Association for car owners.
For my part, I'll be the jerk in the Buick. But it'll be a '64, not a '74. More mass, better styling, less plastic.

Zombie Apocalypse: what would it look like? Texas border, is what.
Border Patrol agents carrying AR-15s and 12-gauge pumps searched the property with Osburn, who also had an AR-15, looking for any sign of the trespassers. After scanning his backyard, Osburn discovered three shoes left behind, and Border Patrol agents said they expected the burglars were less than a mile away.
"Welcome to South Texas," Osburn tells me while extending his hand.
"This is not the first time this has happened," he says. "I have Border Patrol in here every day chasing groups, just about."
As daylight faded, a Border Patrol agent gave the order to leave the ranch, saying he did not want to send his guys into the brush after an unknown number of illegal immigrants who could be waiting for him with weapons. The Brooks County Sheriff's Department is now leading the investigation, but it has turned up no more leads days after the break-in occurred.
Osburn says he has had to take extra precautions in case of just such an attack. "When I go to sleep at night, I lay down and I put my pistol there, I measure it where if somebody comes in the house I can pick it up and go," Osburn says. When mowing the lawn, Osburn says, ranchers in South Texas always need a pistol ready.
"Down here there's no question, 'Oh, was it loaded?'" Osburn says. "Well, hell yeah, it's loaded. Why have a gun if it's not loaded? And it's off safety too. That's the way we live."
Previously, most of the illegals were Mexican families trying to get a better life in America. Maybe not paragons of moral virtue, but at least not actual robbers. That seems to be changing now, according to the locals.
That is how the Zombie Apocalypse is going to be. Except WAY worse, because there will be no helpful cops to back you up when the knobs kick your door down at 3am.Other ranchers tell me that the amount of OTM — other than Mexican — traffic is increasing in South Texas, and that the disposition of the travelers has grown more hostile. Ranchers say the immigrants who reach Brooks County are ready to fight.
Mike Vickers, a doctor who lives on a ranch a few miles north on the opposite side of the Border Patrol checkpoint, says he has had his home broken into too. He says that one week, he had to pull his gun three times. Two of those times, he says, he wasn't sure whether or not he'd have to pull the trigger.
"We're fighting a war here and we've been fighting it a long time," Mike Vickers says. "These people we're encountering here are combative."
Mike Vickers lives with his wife, Linda, who is the chief of staff of the Texas Border Volunteers — a group of people who assist law enforcement with securing the border. Linda says fewer women illegally travel through her property now, because more are surrendering near the border located approximately 70 miles south of the Vickers ranch.
Linda Vickers says she has seen a higher criminal element trespassing through her property and says the OTM traffic coming through her ranch knows how to hug trees and hide in the salt grass. For this reason she has a team of dogs that travel along her property with her, and she can decipher when trespassers set foot on her property by the way her dogs bark.
"The dogs seem to keep them from running, for some reason," she says with a chuckle. "The dogs like it when they run."

Signs of the coming Zombie Apocalypse: 26% have no savings.
Twenty-six percent of Americans have no emergency savings, according to a report by Bankrate.com. Over the past four years, there has been little to no progress when it comes to Americans' saving capacity.Even those who manage to save aren't putting away enough. As many as two-thirds of people in the U.S. don't have the recommended six months of expenses saved. The percentage of people with savings enough to cover at least three months shrank to 40 % in 2014, compared with 45%, a year earlier.
Despite Americans being more secure in their jobs and more comfortable with their debt since the recession ended, their savings capacity remains weak even among those with highest-income household. Only 46% of those with annual income of $75,000 or above have enough savings to cover six months of expenses.

Finally, some bodies to put in all those FEMA camps.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is welcoming members of Congress and their senior staff to tour a temporary shelter being used to house illegal immigrant children — but the invite comes with a list of rules, including a suggestion that members leave their cellphones in their vehicles.
The 40-minute tour will take place Friday at the Ventura County Naval Base in Oxnard, Calif., according to the email invitation, obtained by The Daily Caller.
The tours are meant to give members and staffers an inside look at how temporary facilities are being used to house illegal immigrant children who came to the U.S. without their parents. The minors, who hail mostly from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, are being called "Unaccompanied Children," or UACs.
Sent to members of Congress and staff by Rose Hacking, of the office of the assistant secretary of legislation at HHS, the invitation comes with the following commands:
No recording devices will be allowed (We may ask you to leave your cellphone in our vehicle)
No questions will be allowed during the tour, but questions will be addressed later
No interacting with staff and children at the shelter
We will provide photos of the facility after the tourDuring the tour, "the tour guide will detail what goes on from room to room and the services youth are provided on a daily basis," the email invitation reads.
At least in the Soviet Union, visitors to the Potemkin Village were allowed to take their own snaps.

Ontario Election Day!!!
Yes, I'm telling you to vote for this guy. Go do it now. |
Mr. Hudak may be a dork, but he's better than the alternatives which are Kathleen "Corrupt Socialist" Wynne and Andrea "Commie Doofus" Horwath. That's the most ringing endorsement I can come up with for the man.
For those old enough, I'd like you to remember Rae Days. Everybody else, BILLION DOLLAR GAS PLANT CANCELLATION. Also windmills, and Ornge, and EMR, and Caledonia, and Ian Thompson, and Bruce Montague...
Remember, a vote for anybody other than the PC dude is a vote for higher taxes and more corruption. We may well get both anyway, but at least we get a chance to vote against it.
The Votin' Phantom
Update: Well, looks like we're not going to have Tim Hudak to kick around much longer. A guy who seizes defeat from the jaws of victory, TWICE, that guy is going to resign tonight.
Upperdate: Well, that didn't take long.

Its not just me: Comics really do suck.
I'll go further. I never read comics anymore, despite having been an avid fan and collector in my younger days. The single reason is Leftist ideology in every story. Its repetitious, its boring, its stupid, and I can't stand reading it.In the 900th issue of Action Comics, Superman decides to go before the United Nations and renounce his U.S. citizenship. " 'Truth, justice and the American way'—it's not enough any more," he despairs. That issue, published in April 2011, is perhaps the most dramatic example of modern comics' descent into political correctness, moral ambiguity and leftist ideology. We are comic-book artists and comics are our passion. But more important they've inspired and shaped many millions of young Americans. Our fear is that today's young comic-book readers are being ill-served by a medium that often presents heroes as morally compromised or no different from the criminals they battle. With the rise of moral relativism, "truth, justice and the American way" have lost their meaning.
Update: The Phantom has been BANNED from commenting at The Mary Sue for saying horrible things about the politics of hair. I think. Hard to say, they just started deleting me left and right.

"And who the hell cares about the sexuality of a comic book character anyway?"
Hi, there! I am an actual gay man!
I care about the fact that people go to the effort of realizing that people like me exist in the real world, and should thus probably be represented in fiction. I care about the fact that, if someone is making the effort to establish the parameters of a world where aliens, gods, vampires, mutants, and super-advanced machine intelligences live side-by-side, they also make the effort to figure out where gay people exist in there.
So, I - an actual gay man, who apparently does not exist for your purposes of "who" - do care. But, hey. You've never had to worry about showing up in a source of media, so I can understand why you'd think I don't count.
P.S. People have been caring about the sexuality of comic books ever since Superman kissed Lois Lane, or even since Frederick Wertham raised the dread specter of homosexuality between Batman and Robin.
The Phantom trollthumper • 3 hours ago
Yeah, people "care about it" because homosexuality between Batman and Robin would a be a glorification of the second worst possible form of child abuse, that of an orphaned minor child by their guardian. As in, the person who's supposed to be protecting them from that. The only worse form is sexual abuse by a parent.
So you can pretty much bite down on that one, thumper.
Also, the cutesy "wedding issues" that have been popping up lately? You know, there are people who think that's not the type of fare normally served up to -kids- in a comic book. "Mommy, why is Northstar marrying a boy?"
Or global warming, for that matter. "Mommy, why is Superman crushing people's cars and knocking down the coal fired electrical generating station?"
Or just plain peacenik politics. "Mommy, why is Superman leaving America?"
In a comic?
The basic, fundamental disagreement is about the -purpose- of super hero comic books. One side of the argument says superheros are supposed to be exemplars of all that is heroic and epic in our society, the other side says they are meant to promote whatever special interest propaganda is hot this week.
For my money, comics strayed off epic heroism into scuzzy special interest propaganda about 1993. That's when I stopped collecting.
Get down off the cross, dumbass. Its not about you.
Wow, such a bastard that Phantom guy! PURGE HIM!!!
What does a desperate gun grabber look like in print?
Nice hobo beard, Paulie. |
Paulie is, in addition to being a crybaby at Salon, a columnist for Al Jazeera English. Here's a list of other horseshit that Paulie has written. Paulie is most upsetted in Salon:
Paulie is all upsetted that gun owners in Texas are showing up to demonstrate against idiotic gun prohibitions in Texas.Gun extremists finally go too far: What will make the NRA realize they've lost America?
Will yet another school shooting change the approach of open carry activists determined to arm everyone?
So it now appears that the Texas GOP plans to violate Texans' God-given right to get drunk and shoot someone. Wayne Slater reports:
Open carry advocates say they'll be at the Fort Worth Convention Center this week for the state GOP convention to encourage a change in state law to allow open carry of handguns in Texas. State GOP chairman Steve Munisteri says it's fine if demonstrators want to gather outside the hall, but can't bring their rifles inside. He warns that would violate the prohibition against carrying guns anyplace that has a permit to sell alcohol.
"Do you think it would scare people?" [MSNBC's Joy] Reid asked repeatedly, when she had Tov Henderson, communications director for Open Carry Texas, on "The Reid Report" on May 3. "I can't get you to answer a very simple question, of do you think it scares people to see, let alone one armed person, but a bunch of armed people in this day and age, when we have so many mass shootings? Do you think it scares people?"
And Henderson immediately went off on evasive maneuvers:
"Well, I … to explain here, what a lot of people do not understand is there are already 44 states that allow open carry handguns. Texas, unfortunately, is not one of those. That's what we're trying to achieve. As the law's written right now, we're only permitted to open carry our long guns, and pre-1899 black powder pistols. So the reason for this, because, and the reason for us walking with them, is because we have no other option."No other options? How about leave your guns at home, and write your representative? That's what everyone else does in a representative democracy. But for the open carry folks, that's not good enough, because they are so oppressed, I guess. They "have no other option."
Imagine the nerve of these people, and in broad daylight too! Leave your guns at home and write your representative, because you're SCARING ME!!! And you're not allowed to SCARE ME!!! How dare you show up in public and protest! Go home and shut the hell up like you're supposed to!
Were you one of the guys saying NYPD should tear gas the lot of them and wash the place down with fire hoses, or were you a cheerleader? Well, a quick Google reveals that Paulie was a big ol' cheerleader. Shockah, right?

Lamest objection to a socialist gun grab EVER.
Century International Arms had a $30 million contract in place to import World War II era M1 Garand Rifles from the South Korean government. The U.S. State Department had given preliminary approval to the deal, and the State, Justice and Defense departments had cleared the transaction.
But an executive action announced last year by President Obama ultimately blocked the plan, according to the gun seller, despite pleas from Sen. Patrick Leahy and Gov. Peter Shumlin, both Democrats.
"As a consequence of this denial, there has been a reduction in work and Century has had to make the difficult decision to layoff 41 Vermont employees," the company wrote.
"I think the Obama administration made a bad bad mistake," said Leahy, according to WCAX.
"This is not like selling a bunch of assault weapons; these are basically collectors' items,," he said. "I'm a gun owner and these are not the things someone is going to use to hold up a bank, or shoot people, they are legitimate collector items."

Thought crime. Next logical step in surveillance has been taken.
The Justice Department is resurrecting a program designed to thwart domestic threats to the United States, and Attorney General Eric Holder says those threats include individuals the government deems anti-government or racially prejudiced.
The Domestic Terrorism Executive Committee was created in the wake of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing but was scrapped soon after the 2001 terrorist attacks as intelligence and law enforcement officials shifted their focus to threats from outside the country. The committee will be comprised of figures from the FBI, the National Security Division of the Justice Department and the Attorney General's Advisory Committee.
In his statement announcing the return of the committee, Holder said he remains concerned about the specter of attacks prompted by Islamic extremists, but he said this committee will be tasked with identifying other threats.
"We must also concern ourselves with the continued danger we face from individuals within our own borders who may be motivated by a variety of other causes from anti-government animus to racial prejudice," Holder said.
Yes, they really can do this. They are doing it. Its probably too late to hide already. They have ten years worth of data to crunch and the hardware to crunch it with. If you're a Thought Crime, you are busted, baby. Mao was a piker with his measly "Let a hundred flowers bloom" bullshit. This here is the industrial version.

"Look, shiny thing!... oh, crap."
Gold Star mom: 'This guy was worth my son's life?'
Sondra Andrews' son, 2nd Lt. Darryn Andrews, is one of six soldiers killed reportedly while searching for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.
The sergeant's return to captivity has stirred "very raw emotions."
"It gets really hurtful when I think, this guy was worth my son's life? My son who was patriotic? Who was a true soldier? Who defended his country with his life?" Andrews told Army Times via phone on Monday. "That guy was worth that? I don't think so."
Andrews also was upset to hear the U.S. government agreed to release five prisoners from Guantanamo Bay in exchange for Bergdahl's freedom.
"I bet you anything there were soldiers killed or wounded capturing those five guys," she said. "So what does that do for their sacrifice? They sacrificed for nothing, because they turned right around and let them go."
You know, I've said it before, Barack Obama is really the president Richard Nixon always wanted to be. You know, he's been allowed to act unilaterally in a way that we've fought for decades.
Obama could have successfully, and with some legitimate justification, blamed the VA scandal on the pre-existing culture of corruption there. But this Bergdahl thing is 100% All Barry, All The Time. He -personally- created this prisoner swap and ramrodded it to completion over the shrieks of "DON"T DO IT!!!" from the military, the spooks, and apparently his own propaganda apparatus. He arranged to get rid of a scandal about government screwing over the military... by screwing over the military. Genius!
