Self-driving hotel room?

Some things simply demand to be mocked.

Robotic self-driving hotel room, dream version.

The robotic hotel room on wheels - is this the future of travel? Self-driving suite can ferry guests from place to place - and drones deliver room service through the sunroof

  • Toronto-based Aprilli Design Studio has designed a hotel suite housed within a self-driving vehicle
  • Renderings reveal how the battery-powered hotel-room-on-wheels includes a double bed and shower room
  • The vehicle's designers note that travellers would simply specify the route they wanted to take via an app

Yes friends, the "future of travel" is a camper van.

Actual robot hotel room after 15 years of service.

Also, these geniuses think that "room service" can be delivered by a quadcopter to a moving vehicle that is driving down the highway. Because that will totally work, right?

But best of all:

So that travellers wouldn't miss out on the usual perks of staying in a hotel, Aprilli says it plans to install dozens of hotel facilities across road networks. These stop-off points would house 'public amenities such as food and beverage, meeting room, spa, pool, and gym along with housekeeping, maintenance, and charging services for the travel suites'.

Hotel faclilty with public amenities, dream version.

Trailer parks.

Actual version. Good luck getting room service, bro.

Enchanted Forest Robot Hotel, 2045. Clem cooks meth in the red one.

You know what kills me? Artists and designers got paid good money to come up with this bullshit.

  2. I can just picture it now, 2 people or more getting it on while it drives through town... :)

  3. With the windows open...

You're going to see that as soon as the first driverless taxi hits the street.

  4. H8tr!

That's because you haven't seen the glory of upscale shipping container housing!

Even with promises of increased density it won't be anything like trailer parks. That's for deplorables and other such subhumanz.

  5. Anonymous: In our urban environment that's a feature, not a bug--but only if they aren't cisheterobanal. Wouldn't want to give them ideas.

  7. WiFi Lunchbox Guy: Thanks for the laugh. I don't think I've seen a headline better than "Build the Shipping Container House of Your Dreams" in years!

  8. To be young again. I used to commute to work from San Francisco to San Diego a couple of times/month in an old VW bus, with an upholstered leather armchair, no other seating and I commuted via Pacific Highway, Big Sur, the whole coastal road thing. I'd pull into the camp site in Big Sur northbound and spend the night camping and life didn't get better after that. It changed but, not better.

My secretary retired and she and her husband took to the road for their retirement. God only knows where they are now. Mack Reynolds wrote a few books of this back in the mid 70's.

When I retired from 30 years with the Navy and my bridges were burned behind me I looked at my lifetime accumulation of stuff and took to the road with a sword, a suitcase, golf clubs and a lot of books. I left everything else behind me where a good friend disposed of it as he sought fit. I honestly didn't care what became of it all.

I fetched up on a blessed shore and I'm happy. What more does one need in life?

  9. That last one is actually a theatre set from 2005:

Even so, as an owner of numerous trailers across the years, I find it marvelously creative, and now want my own trailer-trash treehouse.

  10. Hi Rez!

Since you mention, it does make sense. Trailer-dwelling alcoholics don't like changes in elevation. Stairs don't combine well with beer.
