Europe, the cradle of the Enlightenment, 2018:
The freedom of speech does not extend to include defaming the prophet of Islam, the European Court of Human rights ruled Thursday. The Strasbourg-based ECHR ruled that insulting Islamic prophet Muhammad "goes beyond the permissible limits of an objective debate" and "could stir up prejudice and put at risk religious peace."The court's decision comes after it rejected an Austrian woman's claim that her previous conviction for calling Muhammad a pedophile, due to his marriage to a 6-year-old girl, violated her freedom of speech.
The ECHR ruled Austrian courts had "carefully balanced her right to freedom of expression with the right of others to have their religious feelings protected."
No word on when it'll be a crime to defame the Buddha, or Christ, or Ya*we*, or Thor and Odin, for that matter. And hey, how about Dread Cthulhu, no love for squid worship? Come on!

Some group of brilliant European trolls need to set up a court case where one of them mocks Odin, and the other has evidence prepared that he's a devout Odin worshiper and deeply offended by it.
ReplyDeleteAfter the court inevitably finds in favor of the 'pagan' - and they've successfully created two precedents, with multiple religions - then they take an offended Christian to the court.
There isn't enough popcorn in the world, even if the outcome is entirely predictable and inevitable.
At some point Europe (or at least, Western Europe) is going to have decide if it is part of the Dar al-Islam or not.
ReplyDeleteSo far, signs in Eastern Europe say no.
I want to see some Christians suing the French, German and British governments for all the anti-Christian shit they've been doing the last 40 years. Why should Mooselimbs have all the fun?
ReplyDeleteI think they have been suing - but the cases go nowhere. Conservative civil rights cases tend to get short shrift there and little news coverage here. For example, consider the family that wanted to home school and Germany wouldn't let them, so they got asylum in the US under Bush. Obama tried to rescind the asylum and send them back to Germany, claiming it wasn't religious persecution. The Supreme Court didn't hear the families case, but DHS has 'indefinitely deferred' their deportation.
